Masks on a Stick
Masks On A Stick
This category sounds as if it was a confection
and should be sold in a candy store. In truth, most of them are beautiful
enough to be a confection. There are so many masks on a stick to choose from
that it is difficult to find just one that you could say is your favorite. The
mask on a stick can come in many brilliant colors and decorated with beads,
feathers and flowers. The actual mask can be made of a variety of fabrics from
paper to velvet. The stick is most always wooden.
Masks on a stick are not a new accessory and some of them date back to the renaissance which dates back to the fourteenth or fifteenth century. The mask on a stick was a very important part of a lady's wardrobe. The mask on a stick had a face painted on one side that was generally a beautiful lady's face with hair also painted around the face. The decorations could have been beads or feathers or both. On the reverse side of the face was a small mirror. When a lady saw a gentlemen coming toward her for conversation or other meeting she would quickly put the mask on a stick to her face. This gave her the opportunity to see if she was coiffed properly and her face was looking good enough to let this gentleman see her. If she was not satisfied with the way she looked at that moment she just kept the mask on a stick up to her face throughout the entire conversation with the gentleman. In that way, she felt he saw a beautiful face and would remember her as a very attractive lady. Today the lady carries a compact to touch up her shiny face and does not worry about carrying a cumbersome mask on a stick.
