Mardi Gras Jewelry

Mardi Gras krewes, the organizations who arrange various festivities such as balls, floats, and parades during Mardi Gras, traditionally give jewelry and other favors throughout the Carnival. Plastic beads and doubloons are the favors associated with modern day Mardi Gras celebrations, but the jewelry and favors given in the 19th century were a completely different story. Many Mardi Gras krewes date back to the early 19th century and had elaborate rituals filled with glamour and pageantry. In fact, throughout the 1870's-1930's in what has become known as the Golden Age of Mardi Gras, krewes were known for being regal and decadent. They often wore jewel-encrusted royal garments such as crowns, tiaras, and scepters to balls and parades. According to history, any young lady invited to one of the prestigious balls during this time period was asked to dance with a dashing, masked krewe member and also gifted with a beautiful token of their appreciation. It stands to reason that any type of favor given by these krewes would consist of something very special. The Mardi Gras favors bestowed by these krewes were often elaborately handcrafted with many dazzling rhinestones and exquisite workmanship. Each krewe had their own designs which were embellished onto the jewelry. Recipients often passed these favors through their family line where they have been worn proudly by generation after generation.
